For a few years, we have been helping our good friends, the McBurneys and Mr. Arnould, with blueberries. Mr. Arnould has a lot of family land in Robertsdale, Alabama that he has dedicated to blueberries. He has managed to build a nice sort of blueberry farm over the years. When he first began, some of my siblings and I came and helped plant the bushes when they were wee bushes. We have helped a lot over the life of these bushes with picking and weeding and sorting and such. Last summer Joanna and I helped, and now Joanna, Diana, and I are helping with the sorting before they get packaged and sent to local markets.
The sorting is done on a conveyer belt, and we look much like Lucy and Ethel sorting chocolate (only luckily, it doesn't have a 'faster' lever). It can be a very monotonous job of feeling and watching blueberries, but we still enjoy doing it.
Coming out here reminds me of a story book where the city school boy goes out to the country during the summer to help his friends at the farm, much like Robert Falconer in George MacDonald's "The Musician's Quest".

We enjoy walking after dinner, especially through the blueberries! Yum!

A great way to spend summer!
